Set off in search of minke whales, humpbacks and more on this whale-watching cruise from Reykjavik. Pull on a pair of provided coveralls and then stay on the lookout for harbor porpoises, white-beaked dolphins and whales as you cut through the still waters of Faxaflói Bay. Throughout your cruise, listen to the knowledgeable guide’s insightful commentary, and have your camera ready to capture Reykjavik’s native marine life in the wild. Choose from a 3.5-hour cruise or an express 2.5-hour high-speed boat version — perfect if you’re short on time. Please note that the 3-3.5 hour cruise sails at 9:00, 13:00 and 17:00. The 2-2.5 hour cruise sails at 10:00, 14:00 and 21:00. Please note that the departure times depend on time of year.

Choose from a leisurely 3.5-hour cruise or an express 2.5-hour high-speed boat version, and then make your own way to Reykjavik’s Old Harbor, where you’ll board your luxurious, whale-watching boat.

Find a comfortable spot on deck and pull on a pair of provided coveralls to keep you warm. Remember to also bring a hat, scarf and gloves with you to keep you extra toasty. Then, listen as your guide explains what species of marine life you can expect to see, and hear interesting facts and old sea stories about these magnificent mammals.

As your boat slips away from the harbor, scan the water for porpoises, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales and humpbacks whales. Make sure you have your camera ready — with up to 90% whale-spotting success, this Faxaflói Bay cruise provides a fantastic chance to see whales. In the unlikely event that you don’t spot a whale, you will receive a complimentary ticket for another boat ride.

If you feel cold during your cruise, warm yourself up inside the cozy viewing area, where coffee, tea, hot chocolate and light refreshments (own expense) are available.

After 2.5 or 3.5 hours, your experience ends with a drop-off back at your hotel (if booked directly with the supplier)

See the northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, from a comfortable boat on this unique cruise from Reykjavik. Leave Iceland’s coast to experience this natural phenomenon far away from the city lights. Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience as you learn about the myths and scientific phenomena of the lights from your expert local guide.

Board a comfortable viewing boat and leave Reykjavik's coast toward Faxaflói Bay to begin your once-in-a-lifetime northern lights experience.

The northern lights (aurora borealis) create a natural light formation in the sky in the Arctic’s upper atmosphere, about 50 miles (80 km) high. The overwhelming appearance was named by the French philosopher Pierre Gassendi after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek god of the north wind, Boreas.

Your expert guide will tell you all about the fascinating and beautiful northern lights, including the folklore and superstition behind them, as well as the underlying scientific facts that make this magical light show possible. Admire the stellar lights from the luxurious and cozy viewing area and warm yourself up with hot coffee, tea and chocolate and light refreshments (refreshments on own expense).

If you’re looking for a Northern Lights experience with a difference in Reykjavík, come and enjoy an evening with North Sailing onboard the traditional sailing boat Opal. Gaze at the scenery, learn about how to sail a traditionally rigged boat or enjoy the wooden hot tub on-deck.

A trip like no other, you can soak up the atmosphere down below deck and warm up next to the wood burning stove.

During the two-and-a-half-hour trip, you will sail from Reykjavík harbour, between the islands of Faxaflói and majestic lighthouses.

Enjoy fantastic views of the Reykjavík city lights, Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower and the Aurora Borealis – a unique viewpoint unlike anything you can see from land!

Last but not least, try to on-deck hot tub for a reasonable price!

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: North Sailing, Husavik Harbour, Husavik 640 Iceland

You will meet the crew of Opal up to 30 minutes before departure at Reykjavík Harbour, just a 10-minute walk from the city centre. After introductions and a chance to learn about the boat, you will be given a thermal suit (if you want) to keep you warm. The captain will take the boat out of the harbour and you will have the chance to get involved with hoisting the sails – or just sit back with a hot drink and let the others do the work!

Opal is a traditional oak sailing boat, fitted with a first of its kind hybrid electric engine that allows us not only to glide silently through the water but also to minimize our impact on the environment by using renewable electricity. In true Viking-style we set sail into the polar night while stars and the northern lights dance over our heads (if the weather conditions are on our side).

Make sure to bring your swimming things so that you can take the opportunity to luxuriate in the hot tub on deck – there’s nothing quite like floating in hot water with a beer in hand while looking up at an arctic sky.

Finally get a taste of boat life by the wood fire and enjoy surprise refreshments from the crew, before disembarking happy back at the harbour.

No guarantees of seeing the northern lights, this is dependent on the light forecast and the weather conditions.
